Management of Product Development

  • Abschluss Master
  • Dauer 4 Semester
  • Art Berufsbegleitendes Präsenzstudium

Are you interested in agile engineering and design thinking? Innovation management and multicultural and virtual teams? Would you like to actively shape the development processes that a product takes from raw material to a finished product? Then you are the ideal participant for the Master’s program Management of Product Development.

Product development is the process of entirely planning and prototyping novel technical systems. It ranges from finding the product profile to creating a concept, designing, making prototypes, testing and validating. The actual manufacturing phase follows subsequently and is the second and final stage of the product creation process. Thus, product development is certainly one of the core means of adding value in companies and is crucial for their success through innovation. Creativity and performance potential define the success of product development. Participants learn the ways of thinking, methods, and processes of product generation development in an agile approach to system design.

The master's program also includes an international engineering module in China that is conducted in cooperation with the Global Advanced Manufacturing Institute (GAMI) and the Advanced Manufacturing Technology Center (AMTC) as well as Tongji University.

In addition to the engineering expertise, the program in Management of Product Development shares five management modules with other master's programs. This fosters networking across industries and provides the participants with general knowledge in finance, accounting, marketing, international multi-project management, decision and risk management, and human resource management. Therefore, participants can consider the commercial implications of project decisions.

Studienverlauf

The part-time Master´s program is organized in 10 modules over a period of 15 months. It consists of five engineering modules and five management modules, each lasting two weeks. The time between modules is typically spent at the participant’s workplace. This allows participants to focus either entirely on their studies or on their jobs, and to continue with their demanding careers while acquiring new skills.

In addition, the program concludes with a Master's thesis, which the participants can either carry out in their company in cooperation with an institute of KIT in the form of an innovative project or only with one of the KIT institutes. The program completes with a Master of Science (M. Sc.) from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) with 90 ECTS.
